About Us

Our History

  • 1976 — SAZA formally organized as a social, civic, nonprofit, and benevolent organization (10 founding members).
  • 1978 — Chartered with the State of Texas with 12 signatories.
  • 1979 — Began what became an annual Juneteenth Family Celebration, held at Camargo Park (formerly Pablo’s Grove), building a loyal following—especially among military and civilian personnel from Kelly and Lackland Air Force Bases.
  • 1982 — Joined the San Antonio Fiesta Commission as a Participating Member Organization (PMO).
  • 1982 — Presented the first scholarships which was named as the Leonard C. Brooks Scholarship program. As timed passed, the scholarship program was rebranded the Members Memorial Scholarship program.
  • 1983 — Launched “Fiesta West” at Rosedale Park.
  • 1985 — “Fiesta West” evolved into “A Taste of New Orleans” when the event moved to St. Paul Square near downtown San Antonio.
  • 2026 — “A Taste of New Orleans” is celebrating it's 40th Anniversary and is recognized as the jewel of Fiesta San Antonio and is held annually at the beautiful Sunken Garden Theater in Brackenridge Park.
